Fed Cuts Borrowing Costs for Second Time This Year Amid Economic Uncertainty

The US central bank lowered borrowing costs on midweek, representing the second rate cut this year during financial volatility stemming from the government closure and trade duties.

Decision Arrives at Unprecedented Time for Federal Reserve

The move to cut the key rate by a quarter point to a span of 4% to 3.75% comes at an extraordinary juncture for the Fed. The authority has been under significant strain to cut rates despite persistent inflation.

Fed Statement Notes Labor Market Changes

In a announcement, the Fed stated that the unemployment rate had gone up but remains low. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the statement reads. “Inflation has moved up and remains somewhat elevated.”

Federal Closure Complicates Central Bank’s Task

The ongoing government stoppage, now one of the longest in American history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Gathering of key economic data has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the BLS are on leave during the shutdown.

Data Gap Impacts Monetary Moves

The Federal Reserve typically studies BLS data to determine employment trends, including the number of new jobs added to the economy and the current jobless percentage. The last jobs report was released in early September, prior to the shutdown, and gave a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the employment scene in August.

The figure of positions created to the economy in the summer month was lower by over 100k since the spring, and joblessness rose to 4.3% – the highest since three years ago.

Private Data Show Ongoing Decline

Though BLS was set to publish September’s employment data in early October, it halted its release when the shutdown began. Employment data company a leading payroll processor reported earlier this month that the business segment cut 32,000 positions in last month, a sign that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.

“Both the supply and demand for labor has declined quite sharply,” central bank head Jerome Powell said recently, a trend he had previously attributed comes from immigration and tariff policies.

Price Data Shows Moderate Increase

Though BLS’s jobs report has been suspended, the agency still issued its price statistics for September that showed that prices are going up, albeit slowly. Costs increased three percent over the past twelve months, the highest since the start of the year. In April, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The Fed’s target inflation rate is two percent.
